Inner Harbor Navigation Canal Hurricane Protection Project

After the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, AECOM assisted in the rebuilding of New Orleans by supporting the design of a hurricane protection system for the canal which connects the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain. The system includes levees and a proposed concrete and steel hurricane barrier.

AECOM analyzed storm surge and wave modeling studies; performed wave loading calculations; developed a numerical model to evaluate changes in flows and estuarine circulation during and following construction of the hurricane barrier; and undertook two modeling studies to provide critical design information about the performance of the proposed hurricane barrier and sector gates.
